Background

The Farm and Food Policy Project's report and recommendations originate from the input of organizations including family farm, sustainable agriculture, rural, urban, public health, anti-hunger, environmental, faith-based, minority, and other groups at local, regional, and national levels.

In 2005, American Farmland Trust, the Community Food Security Coalition, Environmental Defense, the Northeast Midwest Institute, and the Sustainable Agriculture Coalition convened policy working groups as forums to identify consensus issues and areas of common ground for policy development. The Rural Coalition convened the Farm and Food Policy Project Diversity Initiative to ensure that organizations serving people of color in the food system have the opportunity to link their own initiatives into a comprehensive agenda of food and agriculture policy proposals. The policy development process was overseen by a Coordinating Council of organizations from across the U.S. The Farm and Food Policy Project is coordinated by the Northeast Midwest Institute.

Support for the Project comes from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Claneil Foundation.
